Dancing For Diabetes

Dancing For Diabetes
On February 13th, 2010, Heather Forster will be hosting a Valentine’s Day Dance at Silver Brooke Golf Course.
The fun begins at 8pm and all funds raised will go to the Canadian Diabetes Foundation.
Tickets are just $25 a couple.
“Everyone has their own reason for raising funds. Family history, an awareness that the children of this generation are at a greater risk then ever before to develop Type 2 Diabetes at an earlier age. Physical activity, education and a healthy balanced diet go a long way in controlling Type 2 Diabetes. The funds raised are directed towards diabetes research, advocacy, education and programs.”, says Forster.

For more information or about this fundraiser or to purchase tickets please contact:
Heather Forster at 435-2004.

Everett Legion Gets Busy

The Everett Legion has something to celebrate this year as it is turning 60 years old. The friendships that have been made and the amount of activities that were and are held in this Legion are to be commended. Without it’s volunteers it could not be as successful as it is. The Legion supports any ideas or donations to commemorate this historical year.

Currently the members hold their dart night for Men on Tuesdays and Women on Thursdays both starting at 8pm. The winter dart session has begun but there is dart boards available if you and friend would like to come out and play. You do not have to be a member to play.

On Friday night at 8pm there is Euchre being played and they encourage people to come out and learn and play. All are welcome.

New to the Everett Legion this year is Saturday Night Pool. You must be over 19 to play and it runs from 7pm until midnight. All are welcome and there is a TV on site to watch your favorite games or programs. Snowmobilers are welcome and there is plenty of parking.

Also, the Everett Legion does have a Ladies Auxiliary and this group hosts a variety of events, cooks for functions and is always seeking new members. This group never has too many cooks in the kitchen. They meet on Thursday night at 7pm.

Girl Guides, Brownies, Sparks and Pathfinders meet at the Everett Legion and they are fully to their capacity this year.
Scouting has been very successful in the past in partnership with this Legion but due to lack of volunteers was displaced approximately 7 years ago. On Feb. 4th at 7pm the Everett Legion will be hosting a meeting with Scouts Canada to try and bring back Cubs and Beavers to Everett and area. They are actively looking for volunteers to help lead Scouting in Everett back to success. This would be open to children aged 5 until 9 years of age. A police check would need to be completed to be a volunteer as you would be working with children. Both of these programs are encouraged in communities and are well known for teaching the practices of being a good citizen.

While living in Everett and area this structure has become the gathering place for the community. All ages meet there unless otherwise posted and the hall is able to be rented at anytime and the price does include a bartender. Showers, birthdays, Jack & Jill’s, anniversaries and special events are just a few examples of how this Legion can be used. A full kitchen is on site and catering can be provided at a cost.
Please be reminded that you do not have to be a member of the military to join any Legion. Today, any citizen can join the Legion but we do not forget the history of a Legion and how they were created to help our vets and current military. By joining this community service group you are helping this area become a better place to live for both you, your family and your neighbour.

New in 2010 is an email address for this Legion. It is everett.legion@gmail.com If you would like to speak to someone by phone you can always speak to Orville Jenkins at 435-4022.

Township Approves Everett Ice Rink- Volunteer Meeting This Sunday

I am excited to report that the Township has adopted a Volunteer Ice Rink Policy.  All  Rink volunteers will now be members of the newly formed Everett Volunteer Neighbourhood Group under the Municipal Rink Committee.  This means that a separate volunteer committee (not associated with EPIC) will install, maintain and operate the Central Park Rink and be covered under the Municipality’s Insurance.

What does this mean?
The Township will allow Volunteer Neighbourhood Groups (like ours in Everett) through the direction of the newly formed Outdoor Rink Committee to install, maintain and operate outdoor ice rinks at approved Township locations.
Next Steps
All Central Park Ice rink Volunteers need to attend a brief Training Session.  This will allow volunteers to be covered under the Municipality’s Insurance.
When:  Sunday January 24th at 2pm- Everett Fire Hall- Jim Wales Room
Discussion Points:
  • Appoint Volunteer Coordinator- To  act as the liason between the Municipality and volunteers, Fire Dept. re: flooding, Maintain Maintenance schedule. (I will not be taking on this role)
  • All to sign Volunteer Agreement
  • Next steps re: rink building/timelines
The municipality has already ordered signs which should arrive next week which will be posted at the rink.
Thank you to everyone who has worked so diligently on this project…we will be skating in Everett this winter!
Krista.
